My sister’s middle school had probably like 5 people in her grade that ID’d as trans. Only one of those was transitioning though, he was FTM. For the rest it was mainly just a self expression thing I think. The distinction can be significant because for the majority of kids that identify as trans now, it’s pretty harmless social changes. The amount of kids medically transitioning isn’t nearly as high as some numbers might suggest because of that major distinction.
