I like Heartstopper. I physically own every book Alice Oseman has released and supported her patreon for half a year. I preface my criticism with this so that you understand that I'm not just some hater, and I'm trying to be honest with my feelings.
That being said I really don't like how inaccurately these gay teenagers are written. The fact that it's taken until fucking Volume 5 to have either of them acknowledge sex in the slightest when they should be utterly drowning in hormones, which is only even more accentuated by the fact that they're homosexuals meaning they're even more desperate considering they can't just pick up any regular chick, AND gay men are generally considered the most sexually needy demographic. To have basically no acknowledgement of their sexual needs until volume 5 is just terribly unrealistic.
For comparison, Always Raining Here literally opens on one of the main duo looking for sex online (seen in picrel). Sex is a constant motivation for the characters, and is always acknowledged even if it isn't the defining topic of the scene. It's actually realistic. That's how horny gay teenagers are. It's downright immersion breaking how little sex has been mentioned up to this point. It doesn't even need to be a porn comic, because I wouldn't consider ARH to be one, but at least acknowledge that it's a factor into how these boys think and act.
That being said, this is probably what I should be expecting from an aroace woman writing this series. I will say I really like the art style.
She didn't title it "Foodstopper" which would be more appropriate

the art and the writing are childish. the byproduct aroace themsel.

>That being said, this is probably what I should be expecting from an aroace woman writing this series. I will say I really like the art style. It's not because of that. It's because she's one of the people that thinks that you're practically a pedophile if you mention underage people and having sex in the same sentence.
