Denji may be a simp with no dignity, but most of the jokes at his expense actually land and he can still get shit down when it matters without emotionally breaking down.

Deku’s personality quirks are shallow, he has been decreasing in effectiveness and conviction with each fight, engages in apologetics fir the primary villain and propping up of inconsequential filler characters, and we’re expected to take him and his crybaby tendencies seriously after they were soundly spoofed in the early days of the series.
CSM is self-aware and can delineate between mocking its characters in their downtime and making them look badass during the important fights in a way that BNHA never managed. That’s the difference.

You want the real answer. Hero Academia has had it's popularity peak, it's big anime moments, it's a lot more widely known about which invites a lot of contrarian hatred the internet is known for. I don't dislike Deku for not getting developed, I dislike the story for not really developing anyone, it's really fucking weird how little focus the protagonist has gotten in the 2nd half and it's not as if it's some popularity thing, even the popular rival character had been shelved.
