I think what she wears in the OP image is fine. Instead of the bob cut I'd have her hair long and in a ponytail, maybe a bit of lipstick (since this is often used to signify maturity). A comfy house dress with an apron would look cute and practical and wouldn't be too complex to animate.
The apron thing isn't just a quirk of anime btw, Japanese housewives really do wear them regularly.
