Also, they're implied to sound much worse in-universe than how they do when insert songs start playing.

Yes. In bang dream they worked very hard to get good. They practiced and practiced and practiced for almost an entire season. Instead of "I can buy an $800 Gibson for some reason and now I'm a guitarist immediately".
