What's exactly the difference between demons and yokais beside Yokai not being inherently evil in the legend of Japan?

There isn't any major difference if you remove the Christian world view from demons. Demons encompass a lot of different things in the west, and a large portion of them could be summed up as neutral nature spirits, which makes them comparable with most Yokai.

Yokai are chinese stuff called yaoguai, they are all sort of less than human things (famous one is a flute) that achieved human form through at least decades of self improvement and the grind thus breaking the cycle of karma which is a huge sin and enough to brand them as universally evil because you are supposed to grind good karma instead.
