During summer vacation a group of fifteen children discover a mysterious man living in a cave surrounded by high tech gadgets, the man claims to be a game developer, creating a video game with a giant robot defending Earth from fifteen alien invaders. He asked the children to test the game for him and they agreed.

I'm now curious on the alternate history going on here. And honestly, the president could conceivably justify nuking their own territory to get rid of the extremely dangerous giant monster in there provided the civilians were evacuated before hand.

Don't forget that most US nuclear explosions were done on US ground to test the weapons in the first place.
