It's not, it feels like it truly contradicts one of One Piece’s core themes.
Luffy’s journey is of freedom, growth and adventure. Maybe it is his destiny to free the world from the WG and uncover the True History, but it should be organic and something driven by Luffy’s own actions and motivations, even better if it were a happy coincidence desu (his goal is to become Pirate King after all).
This feels like destiny being pushed on him (and poorly shoe-horned into this story’s plot), especially when tying the ability to become Joy Boy to eating a fruit. It would have been so much better to have Joy Boy be a title that anyone can earn and Luffy simply being the best candidate due to his actions and personality. It would also allow for other legitimate candidates to arise, allowing for further exploration of themes of freedom and peace, just from different perspectives. Even more so, Gear 5 absolutely still works as the awakening of the Gomu Gomu no Mi paramecia fruit. No need to be a mythical God fruit. It also makes the WG look sooo incompetent baka.
