There isn't anything inherently wrong with isekai, it just so happens that it's become a massive cliche in recent years. I don't really get why they keep adapting these crappy light novels.

99.999% of Isekai fail at developing the setting they are placed in and massively cheapen them by constantly referring to the original world or by explicitly bringing over contemporary knowledge and technology into the fantastical other world. For those rare few that actually develop their worlds proper, the rest always fail to give us a reason why this story needed to be an isekai instead of a fantasy story based around the protagonist without it explicitly being for the "Power Fantasy", "Wish-Fulfillment", or otherwise masturbatory self-insert elements.

Log Horizon and pic related are the only Isekai stories I've ever seen where it manages to actually answer both of these problems, by placing the cast in a well-developed and well-explained setting while also making the nature of the story being Isekai actually relevant to both worldbuilding and storytelling and could not be the same without either. Mushoku Tensei is a fine example of an Isekai that has pretty dense worldbuilding, but even then, Rudy being an otaku failure on earth isn't ultimately necessary to the plot or narrative, and is for the most part just an excuse to make our main character far smarter than a child his own age and to """"""justify""""""" his extreme focus and motivation to become stronger.

Most of the main characters in japanese isekai are typical japanese male inserts. So they are bland, pathetic, and the fact that multiple women are consistently interesting in them romantically does more to break the illusion of realism than dragons and magic.

Almost none of them are honest about the physical danger and psychological issues that would result from being sent to another world, something that Digimon Adventure addressed in fucking 1999. Most isekai settings are treated as a low-stakes summer camp.
I'm also tired of video game RPG mechanics being shoved into non-interactive mediums like manga and anime where they fundamentally don't work.
