It's not that she abandoned Shinji, she just didn't care about him beyond his physical wellbeing at all. She wanted him to live and to be the one who decides how Instrumentality plays out, but she didn't give a shit about his mental state. If anything she wanted him to be broken, given how she waited until the last minute of Leliel probing him and how she waited until the mass production series mutilated Asuka before breaking free.

She's a fucking bitch. Arguably one of the worst characters in the series, worse than Gendo or Ritsuko.

It's not exactly clear if Yui can go berserk whenever she wants. Otherwise she would have helped Shinji at other, more trying times (that seemed like they would end up destroying Unit 01). And wouldn't have waited until Shinji was almost passing out inside the entry plug to go berserk and escape the Sea of Dirac

It seems few anons have imagination. It's too bad because it has potential. Yui can either be nice to Shinji or a complete cunt.

Yui has chances to be more nice towards Shinji, she will basically avoid to put him in danger first, compliment him after every successfull missions, and not permit that he dies. On the other side she will not cares about his mental safety, insist that he has to continue to pilot the Eva and be very distant with him most of the times, the best Shinji can get from her is a smile or money. Shinji will be the most blessed of the trio, she will not gaves a shit about Asuka and Rei (if she exist) considering them like target supplies she can replace by selecting other pilots. Eventually her and Misato will not appreciate each others because of Shinji.

Concerning Gendo, he's just some puppet at this point.
