Price of entry for animation was a lot more, you had to be good to make something look halfway decent. Nowadays you can lean on the tools and tricks digital animation supplies to cover up mistakes and constantly shift things around until they look right. So an amateur can make something halfway decent with more time.

The 1992 didn't try to adapt the manga properly and was staffed by some of Toei's best working on it, while the newer one adapted the shitty manga and had less notable staff.

Crystal took many, awful liberties from the manga.

Kageki shojo, ongaku and hana to alice were full of soul. That being said if digital animation was abolished I wouldn’t complain, or at least the massive mouths of the 90s/early 2000s were brought back. Mouths that take up half the head in humourous (often with one hand placed behind the head) are peak anime
