Real Drive

Just finished it. What a strange and entertaining show. Created by Shirow Masamune (Ghost in the Shell). Half episodic, half a plot about environmental destruction caused by nanomachines and some really out there stuff about the Earth's biorhythms. Most of the girls are thick/chubby although they mostly have small waists so they don't all look fat per se, except for Yukino, who is somehow still cute. The show has a mature, fairly "normal" feel to it, yet contains plenty of fanservice. Main characters are a 15 year middle school old girl, Minamo, and an 82 year old man, Haru, who recently woke up from a 50 year coma. They are all but a canon couple, with other characters referring to Haru as Minamo's boyfriend and her speaking of him like someone she's in love with. The final scene is them reuniting and Haru having his 32 year old body restored by the power of water and his old friend, presumably all kinds of wholesome things come next. Another major character dumps his girlfriend for an android that looks like her. There's a weird out of place episode with suspiciously good English text pictured where it preaches to you that it's discrimination to give lifelong blind people eyesight. On the other hand such politically incorrect lines are said like "A woman's body isn't suited for combat like a man's" and a reference to the un-sexy body proportions of most Asian women. The episodic parts were actually fun and character development for Minamo and Haru was strong. Consistent blue-green "solarpunk/ecopunk" aesthetic in an island setting. Show just attempts a lot in general, goes all over the place, and succeeds at most of it. 4 out of 5 stars from me.

You say all that, but the only thing people actually remember about the show is that it was one of the first shows to embrace thick girls. It was ahead of its time.

Oh yeah and fucking cyber brains. A semi-real internet ocean thing that you dive into (Haru was originally a diver) called the Meta-Real, Metal for short. Forgot to mention that
That's understandable I guess. I don't think many people remember it in general though, it was never licensed, seems pretty obscure.

I enjoyed it too. Decent sci-fi with original setting and I still remember the OP and ED songs after all these years.
I wish more series had old guys as MCs I love that shit.

It was good, yeah. I liked this

Shit I thought this was a Dragon Drive thread.

Right with you brother. Old men have more fun than you would think

Besides being a breath of fresh air in a medium largely dominated by school kids I think that they are simply the more interesting characters since they have a complex past and stories to tell.
It doesn't need to be 80yos, I would already be happy with more guys in their 40s. It also really helps when a character's life isn't revolving around their crushes and teen drama.

Agree on all points. If you haven't already watch/read Drifters. Toyohisa and Nobunaga (30 and 50 years old) are a great duo and they actually act like grown men who aren't virgins and have killed people.

Yeah I did and I love it. Golden Kamuy is another prime example for a good mixed cast of guys that feel like individual characters. I wish Drifters would continue. Hellsing Ultimate was one of the most enjoyable action anime I have watched. But the same doesn't work for me with JJK and the likes despite the good animation such series have. Hellsing and Drifters hype me up for how crazy and unhinged the characters are.

I love this show. I should really give it a rewatch.

Amazing that people still watch the same TV rips as we did 15 years ago.

I'll have to check out golden kamuy.
You should.

You should go with the manga for this though, sadly they rushed through the content so fast they adapt almost one volume per episode sometimes. But if you enjoy a varying cast of adult male characters and series that manage to mix comedy, slice-of-life (with soldiers and ainu) and action well this should be something up your alley.

Will do
