This desu. I'm getting sick of Phos' woe is me bullshit too.

Why

I really didn't expect to see him break down in tears. I know it makes sense for his character when you consider his history and motivations but until now he broke character like once when he Daiitoku Myoo'd out against Karen and even then it was to show angered strength, never weakness.

Because he's never really come to terms with the fact he has been kind of shit. Its true that Aechmea has deliberately gaslit and manipulated him for centuries and he is definitely sympathetic but Phos has never really confronted his own flaws honestly - closest he's come is the guilt over Antarc mentally breaking him a bit but he still went on acting almost the exact fucking same later, endangering more gems.

I would love to see Phos reckon with the facts that:
>Companionship is earned, not a right, and his loneliness early on was at least in part due to his own attitude towards others
>He was a shit friend for Cinnabar, Antarc, and Cairngorm (arguably Ghost too) regardless of what wrongs they are also guilty of (which they are)
>He has repeatedly acted incredibly callously due to not considering other's feelings and stuff like the Earth gems turning on him was 100% deserved
>Despite his claims of being utterly alone the whole time he's repeatedly had others put their faith in him and taken a risk on trusting his choices and it ALWAYS leads to him letting them down besides, like, maybe Padpa

I think regardless of anything else Aechmea is going to be an immensely controversial character long after the manga ends because the fanbase (broadly) was wrong about what he was "supposed" to be seen as - or, rather, how the author intended him to be viewed.

People think he's pure evil and some ancient cruel monster? He's a civil servant who gave up enlightenment to try save a bunch of undeserving scum out of empathy.
People think he's a creep who exploited and groomed Craig when they were vulnerable to use him as a pawn? He actually is deeply in love with him, the Ghost Eye shit was seemingly real, and he's the only person Aechmea is completely honest with so far and an equal partner in the plan.
People think he's gonna murder all the jellies and rocks in secret as part of his plan? He has them all made moonies (much to their joy) and they're there with him for the final prayer, showing they are all ready to move on too.
People think he's a sadistic bastard who enjoys feeling like a mastermind with his perfect keikaku? He openly weeps at what has become of Phos in order for him to grant everyone present peace.

Its like every step of the way we got baited into hating him and thinking his sympathetic moments were a feint when he actually was really supposed to just be a tortured anti-villain the whole time, doing horrible things to Phos to save many other people and feeling terrible about it.

I hope I'm wrong though, I fucking hate him still.
