His reasoning, and this is the actual reasoning given in canon, is that he cheated on his wife so that he would hate himself more and be able to disassociate when he inevitably has to sacrifice her along with all of the other participants of the war. If he hates himself, then he won't feel he deserves to try and save his wife or back out from what he's doing because he'll already be in too deep.
His reason was actually that he has to be as edgy and broken as possible so that he won't fall to his own human weakness and love for his family when it comes time to sully his hands.
