I'm sorry for you

What do I really need to know to understand it?

Classic japanese movies and anime. They make parodies on stuff like battle royale, prince of tennis, gundam and all that stuff.

just watch it and enjoy

I see people constantly say that the serious arcs of Gintama are actually really good, is that true?

some are, some are ok, some are skippable

bump

I tried watching Gintama a bit ago and got to the first of what I assume was the serious arcs where it goes more typical shoenen. I've been tempted to watch it to go through those more serious arcs but I can't get through it. I enjoy nearly every second I'm watching a Gintama episode but my god can I not binge watch it. I'm tempted to just skip all the one off episodes and just watch the bigger arcs.

I don't understand the disposition between reality and fantasy in terms of injury and combat.
And sometimes they get their arms broken badly and shit but they just ignore it like it doesnt phase them. Sometimes they break an arm for comedy to escape situations and sometimes they pull a hair out and it hurts a lot and they really feel it.
And how do they avoid death when they get run through with swords and shit but then some die for real from not much damage in comparison

this
they range from good to godly and most are far better than good
It's 100% the best-written shonen though
> t. autism
that's like going watching a rendition of one of shakespeare's plays and going
> ACKSHUALLY... they wouldn't die from that particular fast-acting poison without first being subject to cyanosis!!

> typical shonen
Gintama never was typical shonen. It destroys everything in its medium, let alone demographic
> skip episodes
cuck.

No you fucking retard.
I'm not talking about the technique in which you ignore unreal situations and occurrences. I'm talking about the strange juxtaposition between being a semi immortal god and being a normal frail human with no rhyme or reason and it changes from episode to episode and back and sometimes multiple swaps per episode, so there is no consistency

Gintama just isn't bingeable. One off comedy episodes get tiresome after a while so I need to take a break and watch something else which really fucks with my ability to actually get through it.
