But acceptence for homosexuality and non conformity of gender roles was already widely there in the 90s.

Instead of just coming out of the closet and living as gay men they bend over backwards into massive mental gymnastics to justify their homosexuality (or cross dressing fetish) as a medical condition that needs to be remedied by conversion therapy via hormones and frankenstein surgery to turn them into a mockery of whatever gender they think their behavior alligns to.
