It's a story about exactly that. It's supposed to be painful, but you never forget the pain and that makes it worth experiencing.

I thought the ending was fine. Togame was a pathological liar, but the only one who bought her lies was herself. In the end she sought to lessen the blow Shichika felt by lying about how she felt about him. Shichika grew from a tool into a person capable of making his own choices and moral judgements. The whole journey to collect the swords and what ultimately happened to them was part of the forging process. The one true sword withstands the blows of its peers and survives where the rest break.
