Of all the comic book powers Horikoshi could have used, why did he chose the most boring brick ability?

What made it interesting (at first) was that it was a stockpiled energy ability that massively amplified any of his movements (punches, kicks, finger flicks, etc), but it would break his bones so he had to use it strategically in select parts of his body. It started to become less interesting after season 2 when he barely used 100% anymore and just hopped around at whatever percentage without any cost. The tournament fight with Todoroki was great because he was breaking his fingers one at a time while trying to stay in the ring.

His hair is very distinctive. At least he doesn't have brown hair.

The Brick™ is the core needed for other better abilities.
There isn't a point to shooting lasers if it turns out the normal katana asshole is just as strong.

So the brick is mandatory.
The problem with MHA is that the manga is unwilling to let Deku outscale the entire cast, but its also unwilling to have Deku get stronger by more and more time skips.
The current arc is really boring we because we get OfA 2.0 to be treated as if he is actually invincible, and a result you have shit like space lasers or kamehameas being useless.

The actual Batman would pull out the most convoluted reasons to beat an opponent that was way out of his league. So the sky's the limit I guess.

analyze shigaraki's decay, find it works via some psuedo science enzyme or process, and cook up a chemical neutralizing agent, while also stealing the last quirk erasing bullet and making shiggy swallow it

current shiggy is already having his "quirks" erased by Eraser, the bullet would also not stop his stupid "body growth" shit that is "totally not a quirk guys trust me"

The main hero's ability has to be as versatile as possible given how he's going to be in a ton of fights. Cooking up some super gimmicky ability works for a one-off villain, but not the hero

If the writing changed for deku why would shiggy have to stay exactly the same?

Actual Batman would just call up the Justice League for someone as threatening as current Shigaraki
But you seem to be missing that if Deku was Batman instead of Superman, that Shiggy wouldn't have to be as broken as he is in the actual manga either

He is given 7 powers later but all he uses them for is punching even harder:
Tentacles, which he uses to reinforce his arms for harder punches.
Levitation, so he can punch flying enemies.
Danger sense, which might as well only exist in lore since he still misses out on basic threats for unclear reasons.
Smokescreen, so he can pollute the environment while he punches a guy, because it is not like there is any place for stealth in punch harder manga.
Energy focus, so he can put all of his power in a single punch.
And the final one is still unknown, so the author can save one last asspull for the final fight.

He does not become untouchable or elaborate plans, though. He could yeah. But it is not what Deku does with those powers. His strategy is running face-first into danger and punching as hard as he can.

you're right, horikoshi is not capable to use any of those powers to the maximum capacity, deku probably wont be able to use the 100% because he loses OFA in the final fight or something.
