I just finished Lupin Part 5, and it left me with mixed feelings. The animation was nice, but the story had a few holes in it. If this is the highest rated of the modern trilogy, then I have a bad feeling about part 6.
I just finished Lupin Part 5, and it left me with mixed feelings. The animation was nice...
Part 6 tried to be more episodic. There were still longer plots (two separate ones, one for each half of the season), but unlike in the other modern seasons the actual episodic stories were almost completely separate from them, not carrying the new OCs or anything.
There are a couple of standout episodes, but neither of the two main plotlines were good and most episodic stories also were just... "there".
Main things that bothered me were the thing about Lupin having a real face under a mask the whole time. How one keeps that a secret is beyond me, especially with how many fights he gets into, how many times he has been arrested, or otherwise being captured. Nobody ever pulled at his cheek, to check if he wasn't someone else wearing a Lupin mask?
The thing with the main bad guy changing his mind about his daughter in the last 4 minutes, was extremely jarring. It came out of nowhere, and felt really undeserved.
And maybe he gets more spotlight in part 6, but for being hyped up as Lupin's one true rival, Albert was just basically a really good assassin. Which is kinda underwhealming in this series.
Eh, it's always kind of a mixed bag. But you watch Lupin mainly for the characters and their chemistry. That's why Part 2 is held in high regard, despite having some downright awful animation and a lot of retarded plots.
>the modern trilogy
Why does everybody forget about the best part?
I absolutely didn't care about The Woman called Fujiko. It's a 4/10 show at best.
It was way better than Part 4's main plot at least. And there are several arcs that are pretty kino.
But Lupin generally has an issue with weak endings.
Like most of the OVAs are pretty watchable and fun adventure movies, but in the last 15-20 minutes they pull something utterly retarded out of their hat as a final twist.
So you bitching mainly about the last arc kinda makes sense. Also the villain was fucking weak. Say what you want about DaVinci, but at least he was grand and kinda unique.
Couldn't help but to notice some nips in the OP.
>Main things that bothered me were the thing about Lupin having a real face under a mask the whole time.
That was actually a plot point from the manga. It also had been referenced less directly a couple of times when some Lupin profiles in the anime mention his real appearance is unknown.
>And maybe he gets more spotlight in part 6, but for being hyped up as Lupin's one true rival, Albert was just basically a really good assassin. Which is kinda underwhealming in this series.
Albert's presence in part 6 feels almost completely pointless. Don't expect it to add anything even though you'd think a rare recurring character would have some kind of point.
aside from these two things, I very enojoyed Part 5 more than Part 6. the separate story-arc, the homage to various Lupin shows, the tone...
The last 3 or so episodes of part 5 are absolute kino

Okay sure, but it still feels like in a world with realistic face masks, someone like Zenigata would make sure that Lupin isn't wearing one, when he gets caught.
>Don't expect it to add anything even though you'd think a rare recurring character would have some kind of point.
Maybe he will get something to do in part 7? I really didn't get a sense of his character, as the first time they show him, he is extremely competent, and almost kills Lupin, but then he is downgraded to just being a friendly ally who is good at killing people (Lupin already has two of those). I guess he just didn't do much to earn the spot of Lupin's rival (he already has one of those too).
Part 5 had amazing animation. Many shots very very dynamic and it was nice to look at.
What pissed me off a lot is that Lupin is such a damn simp for a total hoe. Especially when he gets a better love interest every part.
Pfff, Fujiko is great and Lupin's one true love, because she doesn't have some kind of idealized image of him and is fiercely independent. Part 5 hammers this home once and for all.
Fujiko should have pulled Ami aside and said "Look kid, you are basically clone #94 of Clarisse (Rei variant) and nobody will ever see or hear from you again after this season. Lupin isn't going to go for it."
>SEX: UNKNOWN
I assume Lupin is a woman just because it'd make 'him' harder to find.
I read once a Fujiko Mine review that claimed the twist villain was a grotesque caricature of Clarisse and pretty much every Lupin's occasional love interest and Fujiko showing off she could touch the sea and bath in the sun was a petty revenge against all those moe heroines that took Fujiko's place in the collective mindset.
That is a pretty dark read on a very weird finale. And not something that strikes me as particularly relevant, since Fujiko is barely ever jealous and usually gets a lot of screentime. Hell, there's one special where she throws a tantrum and Goemon, bless his heart, consoles her because he thinks it's because Lupin is hanging out with the girl of the week. But then Fujiko tells him that it's just about they weren't allowed to keep any of the treasure from the adventure.
I think the few girls that actually differ from the Clarisse model are far more interesting.
Rebecca was basically Fujiko lite.
That banker chick from Money Wars, that was actually a villain and got treated as one by Lupin.
Hell even the girl from The First was kinda different, because she seemed like a self insert for the Lupin fandom, in that she had no romantic intentions whatsoever and everyone in the gang magically liked her.
Special shoutout to the girl from "The Columbus File" who was openly bi and wanted to fuck both Lupin and Fujiko. Should have been in a better film.
Why even have seasonal love interests, if I absolutely 100% know for a fact that it's gonna be a one sided thing, because Lupin isn't thinking of anyone other than Fujiko?
Because Clarisse inspired an entire generation of ronery young men to stop pursuing relationships and instead adopt a 2D girl as a waifu, hence creating the modern anime fandom.
The most recent part actually pulls a pretty clever subversion on that part.
And I always felt it made more sense to add one-off love interests for Goemon or Jigen... hell, even Zenigata. Give him some milfy superior at Interpol or something.
Because we know that Lupin doesn't go for underage girls and literally confessed his love to Fujiko several times now. And while Fujiko is too cool to say it back, we also know that it's mutual, because of how often she's put her life on the line for him.
I watched The Great Pretender a few months ago, and I watched Lupin Part IV and V recently. Lupin is a million times better than the not so great pretender.
>Because we know that Lupin doesn't go for underage girls and literally confessed his love to Fujiko several times now. And while Fujiko is too cool to say it back, we also know that it's mutual, because of how often she's put her life on the line for him.
Well that's the thing, how much longer can they keep playing out the same will they/won't they thing? Once they go 100% on their relationship, it will lose it's charm quickly, but going through a few more parts of that is also gonna be dull. Personally I don't care for Fujiko at all, and would much rather watch a show all about Lupin and the boys hanging out.
