Since when are fantasy and metal not intertwined?

Always have been, but at the same time, it's not something you expect, like:
>What should we use for the soundtrack for our fantasy anime? Slow, majestic medieval-sounding music? Grand choirs and opera singers?
>No, it should be fast-paced and use entirely modern instruments
>Brilliant, I'll get on it right away

I want some fantasy anime soundtrack by stratovarius, now, thank you.

Dumb frogposter.

Your description gives me the impression that you have a confused idea about what music would have been played in the middle ages.
But Gregorian chants are a thing, so there is almost nothing objectively wrong with your post (other than opera, which was invented in the 17th century).

It's more about what people THINK was played in the middle ages, or what they associate with it. Also frogposters might be dumb but Thunderbolt Fantasy is objectively kino regardless.

gregorian chants were big liturgical shit but philosophy of music was big since the BC's. Lyre-y lutes and panpipes are cool from prehistory on.
nah, it's what we've got written evidence of. we've also got written evidence when (secular) things turned to polyphony a bit before the renaissance.

Heavy metal and fantasy are practically synonymous though, not unexpected at all.
