I’m convinced that Yamato was supposed to join the crew. But during the 4 week hiatus not to long ago the story changed.
Maybe wanting to wrap up One Piece there wasn’t enough room for an extra crew member? This is just a theory I have, but I am actually upset at the decision, a 1st for me when it comes to One piece.

Alright, denialkeks, here is my concession. I was wrong. Yamato is not a joiner or nakama. Yamatostans can't even pretend like the promise to join is worth anything, since the same promise was extended to Kin, Momo, and Tama.
However, I argue the bait and switch regarding Yamato joining bad writing and indicative of a larger problem with One Piece, especially lately. Character bloat, a lack of focus, and constant fake-outs. Wano has been the single worst arc in those regards.

Yeah I definitely feel like the end of Wano is poorly written more and more. She literally says she will join Luffy on the last panel of 1056 but now she suddenly changes her mind. Then Luffy says she can join him later but there's NO FUCKING TIME, Oda plans to end the story in 3 years. Even if there's no way he could do it that fast it's still evident that he's not planning to give Yamato nearly as much time as she needs to feel like part of the crew. If she's joining it better be after the next arc which would probably be short like Zou. Next arc might be Luffy Shanks reunion which might be why Oda didn't want to throw Yamato in, to give full focus to Luffy and Usopp.

Yamato not joining is the most surreal thing . She is a strong fighter. She got a lot of screentime . Her character was basically someone chained for years waiting for the day someone would free Wano and herself at the same time. She wanted to go out to the sea and feel free . All this and in the end she didn't join ._.
I don't know... It doesn't even feel like a Paulie situation because Paulie was only truely relevent in W7, at EL he had a lot less screen time and we could tell by E7 that Franky had a higher chance of joining , especially since he got to fight a C9 agent.
Doesn't feel like a Vivi either because Vivi was the princess of her kingdom and outside of being cute and kind, she wouldn't bring much to the crew. Yamato at least is a relevent fighter so she would bring as much as Zoro/Luffy since the three of them are basically good only for the fighting.
Yamato aside kinda disapointed we didn't see a quick Luffy/Marco interraction or Zoro visiting Ryuma grave .

It’s obvious since the SH don’t need a “log writer” nor another fighter. We already have Zoro who will become the WSS.
Carrot has a better chance and candidate cuz she is perfect for the “lookout” role with her high/double jump and great eyesight. In fact, she does play that role during WCI arc. Although we still don’t have a confirmation about her accepting the role of a ruler or being a stowaway.
Well, it’s still a waste that Yamato didn’t join for reasons: 1.) She has a large fandom 2.) More exciting adventures w/ her being a SH 3.) A legit strong fighter perfect against end-game villains. And, many more.
Story-wise, it does have a lot of sense and of course, Oda being Oda. Just because many fans wants her to be a SH doesn’t mean Oda will meet that expectation. It’s still his story after all and because of that, we are here in this subreddit right now waiting for the next chapter or spoilers lol.
