His logic seems pretty sound. She doesn't have to take his offer, and he should be easily able to take a loss and find someone else who's actually interested in marriage (business relationship). Loveless marriages are kind of shit.

Everyone does. I'm not sure how to explain this but gifts aren't actually gifts. They're meant to either endear you to the person giving them or give you incentive to return the gesture.

It comes from tradition, where you bough gifts when you wanter to court a girl and later you would be payed back with the marriage portion, it wasn't a gift but an investment.
That say, it only worked if her father approved you, so even back then if they didn't choose you you would lose every investment done.
