Being different to s1 /= it sucks. In fact the battle royal with humans, demons and gods and the grey morality of the conflict were way better than the random bullshit of season 1. The only thing that sucked was the romance taking up more screen time than necessary and the King's motivations with the Bahamut were kinda weak.

It sucked because it lost the comfy fantasy adventure atmosphere and humor from S1, which was the main selling point. All the melodrama was really cheap and forced, tons of loved characters were shafted just to milk some feels. I was indifferent about the romance

The "Female director " had an interview where she pretty much confirmed she didn't watch season 1 to get a feel for the characters and wanted to have her own spin on the show.
