Dude, Dragon Ball is so much better than this the comparisons are kind of crazy. Super is another story, of course, but in looking at the original anime the only real overlap is that both series have auras; however, in Dragon Ball those auras go away when the fighting starts. They exist to show that a character is building power or pushing themselves particularly hard. In One Piece's anime, the auras are dominating the entire combat. They're just suddenly there for no reason, and not only do they add nothing of value to the fight scene, they detract from the scene by being so overly showy and explosive that you can barely even tell what's going on.

And then there's the pacing. There are usually lots of cutaways from fights in Dragon Ball, but those cutaways aren't happening between the punches landing and the punches carrying through! I cannot fucking imagine how someone thought it would ever be a good idea to throw in a bunch of flashbacks which completely destroy the momentum of Luffy's uppercut.

It's like the directors of this episode read the book on how to do good animated combat, just so they could tell the animators to draw the literal opposite.

I think Super is just much fresher in people's memories, but DBZ is just leagues above this

I've preferred the pre time skip fights until whole cake with Luffy vs Katakuri. A lot of the post time skip fights didn't feel as brutal to me as pre time skip until Katakuri. Then we started getting Wano fights and even some of the lamer fights in the manga like Sanji vs page one was super enjoyable to watch.

We then got the first use of auras in Luffy's first fight with Kaido but it was only at the start. I didn't like it but it didn't detract from the fight.

Now we literally have base form Luffy with super sayian aura flying around fighting Kaido with every attack being completely covered by blinding lights.

Idk why they thought one piece fans, who've had pretty tame fights in terms of visual effects, would want a DBZ style light show (and desu comparing it to DBZ is an insult, the effects there rarely if ever detract from the fight)

wow japanese fans are vocal about the new episode and they are not happy. Theyre discontented with the way Toei's padding the episodes and the whole second coming of Porygon thing. I guess they were holding out hope for a watchable product route. There's even a petition that's garnered thousands of signatures to have the episode changed. Obviously that wont happen but it shows how unhappy they are.

I’m in the minority that I actually enjoyed this in motion. I can understand why it’s not someone’s taste but it was very Gurren Lagannesque which I appreciated. I do think the lighting and glares are a little much but honestly it just feels like they’re just dialing up to celebrate the series and I really do feel the love put into these moments. If being over the top is our only complaint then I think we’re in a good place and should’ve consider how much they’ve improved the anime this year alone, let alone the whole arc. I think it’s disingenuous to say they ruined this moment when on a technical level it’s still really impressive.

Honestly... As someone who actually watched the episode, it looks fine in motion. I daresay it looks pretty cool.

Edit: rewatched the scene after typing the comment, it's freaking epic. The screenshots are clearly cherry picking the messiest frames in the fight. It's like screenshotting a stretch frame in good animation and saying "hurrdurr shit quality".

The size and intensity of the auras and stuff may be a bit overkill, but I think they add a bit more visual clarity for people that "hey, this is something even more than Ryuo (depicted previously with the red/blue-veiny aura like in 1015)", and as much as the sakura petals may be overused, I believe they're a homage to Hyogoro, the Flower, who taught him how to use Ryuo in the first place.

Edit2: Also, Gold aura, because as a conqueror, Luffy is getting closer to his goal of Pirate King, GOLD Roger.

The anime also has had different ways of representing Haki to the viewer: e.g when Luffy started using armament Haki post-ts, his arms/etc would briefly flash red before becoming black. For manga readers who only see black and white, it made sense to show ACoC as just "not physically making contact". It's hard for Oda to represent that differently in a blalck-and-white medium. What the anime did with the impact frame for the first kick was awesome. It showed the same intensity as the manga panel by having the kick and the club be entirely black with the gold clash in the middle, before the colour flows into the scene from the centre.

It's also abundantly clear when watching that yes, they in fact do not make physical contact since using the aCoC in their hits.

Its definitely not perfect, but I still liked it overall, and I appreciate what they've done.

Yea if you enjoy flashy anime scenes, maybe it is for you. Most people enjoy these scene though, but many also couldn’t hide our disappointment because we thought Oda did it better, as I presented in this post.

This is just not true. I specifically searched for the clearest frame, specifically the second image. The rest of the scene got either Kaido or Luffy covered in yellow.

I can tolerate about Hyogoro’s flower theme but the amount of flower petals were just overkill. And despite of the name, there’s nothing GOLD about Roger beside his orange-ish pants. There’s also no gold aura on his clash with WB.

Anyway, color reinterpretation of haki could’ve been done better. Gear 2 got Luffy’s body pink-ish because his body produced heat and steam. There are no pink color in the manga yet it made sense.

Its also not new that manga, color can also be presented in spectrum of black-gray-white. For example: Susanoo of the uchiha clan or super saiyan hair and aura. The colors that were imagined in the black-white manga could’ve been amazing if it’s done right.

And yes I know that one piece is published at a time where they have to be more conservative with the brutality, but I don’t want to see fucking petals and light effects on a fight up in the sky on a skull against the strongest creature.

Just make some great choreography, with heavy blows and some black lighting for the coc effects and keep it dark. I would rather have a 4 minute brawl than this spread out fight over 17 episodes where luffy hears hyogoros lessons for the 8th time.

In one piece, in my opinion, this is a problem since first haki clash and fight versus Mingo, when conquerors clashes starting to seem like supersayans charging power or even worst when the last punch that defeated Mingo took five seconds of nonsense screaming, when manga showed it in 2panels and made us feel the power up G4 were. I started to hate anime at that point, and it had went worse since then (both, anime and my hate to it)

The problem is that make anime in this way, sure is cheaper and if a lot of fans like it, there's no way they're gonna make it like before or close to manga. Damn it, this kind of fan also write every week and everywhere that this animation is better than ever, I laughed at first but now it has become a real problem that all of us are gonna suffer forever.

From Toei's point of view: if you manage to sell more product and cheaper, you are doing it well. And being One Piece a long term brand that only adds fans everyday, the ones who doesn't like the new way are condemned to be seen as haters or crybabies. Our only hope is that someday, someone decide to make a proper and accurate version to manga.
