Nadesico's OP is/was one of the most highly rated OPs out there.
>underappreciated
The Japanese literally voted this as the best ED of the 1990s.
It's like if Evangelion's OP and Getter Robo Armageddon's 2nd OP mixed.

Did anybody even watch this?

I mean I am sure of it but it was so long ago and nobody ever brought it up again afterwards I can't for the life of me remember the threads anymore. I remember that I liked it a lot but that the second half made some questionable choices.
I miss when anime OPs didn't feel like advertisements for pop stars.
the japanese, user, not the west lol
i haven't seen a single person outside of Any Forums who has heard of mahouguru

This was played on national US TV if I recall
Wait, I was confused. Nozomi Entertainment placed it onto Youtube

That's what two of those are, but I do get what you mean.
There were a lot more OP songs that were made specifically -for- the anime in the past, rather than just being some licensed song.
They still exist though, there's plenty of modern OPs where the music was obviously made for the anime.

This one was really good and yet it's so underappreciated. It's not even because of my Konomi bias, it's a really good song on its own.
A more modern example of a really underappreciated OP and ED

I just like how different it is from the tone of the series.
I think it's neat
you and me are bros. Good lord what I wouldn't give for a proper rerelease

Never watched Fractale itself but this OP really illustrates the feeling of pure discovery and wonder into the unknown.
Afromania was a good aniband
I mean I think it was always pretty clear that they wanted to make money off record singles but it just seems like they used to be far less... obvious about it. Like you said, a lot of it can just sort of start to feel indistinct. So many shows just feel like you could swap the intros around and nobody would really notice because they're just singing about generic themes and concepts that can adapt to many things. They don't really SOUND like their show especially if you pay attention to the lyrics.

The raw techno of Hitomi no Tsubasa arguably reflected the craziness of Code Geass the most compared to the other ops imo
I saw this a lot but just because something doesn't get too much attention here doesn't mean it's underrated, it just means it's usually be talked up over at /m/
