ZZ biggest problem isn't the tone, but its characters. Not only does it actively harm the characterisation of recurring characters, the new ones aren't much better.
Beecha and Mondo are incredibly annoying with their antics that goes unpunished and ultimately rewarded at the end of the series.
Judau is mostly a Mary Sue.
And Glemy is one of the least interesting Gundam antagonists.
