Which anime do you think has the most impressive traditional animation (heavy use of CG not allowed)? Impressive composition/visual design is also acceptable as opposed to just raw bruteforcing of tons of in-betweens (e.g. Production IG).
The Ghibli films immediately come to mind along with the things Otomo worked on like Akira, Freedom Project, Memories, and Steamboy. Also the Madhouse works associated with Satoshi Kon tend to be really well animated (e.g. Paranoia Agent, Perfect Blue, Paprika).
However, I find myself opening up Evangelion a lot (even as someone who's lukewarm on the series) because the compositions and panning shots have a majesty to them I don't get the same feeling for when watching other stuff. This is a really awesome compilation of all the panning shots in Eva just to get a sense of what I mean: imgur.com/gallery/d851A
The studio Gainax stuff always has a sense of being impressive from a raw talent traditional art standpoint even starting from something like Daicon IV (whose influence can be felt in Evangelion and Nausicaa [Ghibli-made but Anno worked a lot on it]).
(This isn't purely a /wsr/ thread since I'm making some contributions as well. This isn't a formal request but an invitation to discussing technically impressive traditional animation in anime.)
I unironically don't care much about animation or visuals. It's the least important thing. I'm fine with the visuals of an average 2000s anime in 480p DVD quality. But here, macross DYRL is pretty cool looking. You should watch it.
>I unironically don't care much about animation or visuals Honest question, are you female? I notice on Pixiv (where you can sort by popular with male/female) you often see more an emphasis on narrative than pure visuals.

These are insanely cool. Reminds me of The Five Star Stories.
Eva definitely has some great composition in it but the animation itself really isn't that great. I think the original ghost in the shell should be mentioned.
Kayden Gray
It has good animation but for some reason I'm really unfairly biased against Production I.G.
I guess it's because their stories are often downers to me (e.g. GITS, Dead Leaves).
I have similar feelings to Otomo's works but his drawings have so much detail that it's impossible for me to avoid appreciating them.
I would have wanted someone like Katsuya Terada to make a full-length anime since his Monkey King manga has some good drawings.
An animation at 1 frame per second can be carried by strong graphic composition or interesting perspective. Animation isn't solely about creating the most continuous or motion-inducing product in all cases. It's just to create an interesting vicarious vision of a place or an experience which can be nearly motionless or extremely continuous.
The realm of "traditional animation" also includes raw draftsmanship. Physical traditional drawing. Highly detailed drawings in an animation are to be appreciated here.
I didn't say people can't post animated or continuous things. I just didn't have them to contribute in my first few posts because I posted panning shots (which are in motion when viewed).
