This. They filled the entire team with younger guys who've proven themselves in other production rather than very well known and sought after talent (with the exception of Ushio). Most of them will be making their name here if the production goes well.

It's just true. Mecha is a little better, but battle shonen is complete and utter schlock. CSM even giving a pass at themes that are more than "friends good, murder bad" puts it ahead of its peers.

Eva has the same message as any of those by the numbers battle shonen, which is why it was able to get so many otaku interested in it when other mecha do more than the bare minimun Eva does on themes alone. CSM is FLCL tier of boss rush where nothing matters because it's based on braindead entertaintment hanging from the fetishes of the author since it relies on that one character alone.
CSM is just doing what KNY did. Be the first of the generation on it's range, KNY is traditional battle shonen and CSM is edgy battle shonen. None of them are "ahead of it's peers" because of any other merit other than being created just when a new generation of nips is discovering anime and manga
