I can agree that Lain appeals to people on the spectrum.
It features a girl that starts out feeling immensely isolated but opens up on the internet.
This is because for autistic people, the internet bypasses the gripes of actual socialization that affect them (I.E eye contact, body language, etc). It's completely relatable to them.

I'm not seeing the tranny element though. The entire point of the show is not any individual human being is Lain except Lain, but all humans collectively are lain.

So I don't see how a tranny can see that and go "I am Lain" because that's completely misunderstanding the point of the series.

Lain just has a tranny magnet character design. Not much else.

With that argument you could pretty much place any female character in anime as a tranny magnet.
