No393… Finished creating retake instructions.
No394 ... In a clear copy of the dialogue in the balloon.
Hunter x Hunter
When will jump release it though?
Quality > Quantity
When the first 10 chapters are finished and approved
391 was completely finished as of a few days ago, and the contents of an issue of WSJ have to be finalised 4 weeks in advance, so the earliest we’ll see it is late August.
Where's 391
I don't think they'll announce the serialization until Togashi finishes all of them.
sandman's translation
[No. 393] I've finished giving advices to my assistants about how they should redraw this chapter.
[No.394] I'm writing characters' words neatly in speech bubbles.
Why is he writing the dialogue in the bubbles instead of his assistants?
not sure. here's deepL translation
No393...Finished preparing instructions for retakes.
No394...Clean-up of dialogue within the speech bubbles is in progress.
Lettering in comics is a skill unto itself. Then again, it could just be some mistranslation on Sandman's end.
They should move this to Jump + and have release it biweekly
Would make sense, but Togashi really likes WSJ despite them working him like a dog in the 90s so he’s hesitant to go anywhere else. His autistic stubbornness is part of the reason it took him 15 years of excruciating back pain and a further 2 years of it being so bad he’s have to shit himself and then shower instead of wiping for him to finally realise "maybe my condition isn’t going to get better and I should change my work setup." He has finally made a change on that though, so maybe some day soon he’ll realise that Shueisha have other publications that would be a better fit for.
Yeah I figured. Fujimoto improved so much with Jump+ but Togashi's too old to give a shit I bet
i don't know shit about how manga is produced evidently. i don't know what a 'retake' is. how long exactly does it take for an author and his assistants to finish a chapter? logic dictates that for a healthy author it's less than a week... but it seems like togashi submitted 391 to his assistants a couple days ago and it was finished in two days or so? confusion.
These are a lot of specific terms being thrown through translation telephone game. Togashi's assistants can work fast, he works generally slowly(a page a day). The pages can be finalized quickly, but they then have to be submitted to the editor. The editor then comments on changes to be made, if there are any, which then has to be followed through on.

Shocked that HxH even has editor
Togashi himself works slowly because he’s a cripple, but he has 5 or 6 assistants who aren’t cripples and thus they work quite fast. Typically the mangaka will write and storyboard the chapter, and then draw all the character art and most of the foreground details of the chapter. Once they’ve finished work on a page, their assistants will draw all the background art plus anything else the mangaka didn’t have time to or didn’t feel like drawing. There are exceptions to this but that’s how most weekly and a lot of monthly series operate. Togashi can only draw 1 or 2 pages per day due to his condition, but his assistants can draw much faster due to not being disabled. When Togashi finishes the character art in a 19 page chapter, his 5 or 6 assistants together can easily bang out the remaining background art and other miscellaneous stuff in a day, as it’s only like 3 or 4 pages worth of stuff per person on average. If Togashi was healthy and working normally they would complete the background art on a page by page basis as Togashi finished them, but it seems like Togashi’s current method involves finishing the character art for a whole volume before his assistants blitz through said volume doing all the background art.
Togashi has the credibility to do whatever he wants but he still seems to respect his editors’ opinions. I know some other highly revered mangaka like Araki are the same, they know very clearly what they want to do with their works and if they wanted to they could just ignore their editors completely and still get published, but they still work closely with their editors anyway because it keeps them on track and maintains quality.
I remember in 381-390 a former BNH editor started working for HxH and he started gushing about how 383 was one of the most emotions scenes he's ever read in manga or w/e
Oh man I forgot about that. He was talking about how it was something that had never been done before and would change the history of manga or some shit too. 383 was a pretty fucking good (and upsetting) chapter but he really oversold it. But if BNH was all he’d worked on previously then I don’t think it’s that surprising he’d be blown away by something actually competently written lmao.
