Keep in mind the Britannian royal family of the Holy Britannian Empire isn't the royal family of Great Britain (in universe they were under the reign of the Tudors until Napoleon dethroned them). Charles & Lelouch are just descended from a noble who rallied much of the British nobility to flee to North America after Napoleon invaded. They probably still had a claim, but Charles didn't care by that point since it was the endgame for his scheme.
They won a war with the Geass universe EU and secured control over all the areas in blue in Europe & Africa. I'm not sure why they got France & Spain unless the HBE was harboring the descendants of their old monarchies and restored them.
