No anime has ever successfully used symbolism or character development as well as watchmen. Hell even mysteries are a scarcity in japan which is weird because it's such a good way to tell a story

Berserk is not comparable at all, golden age sorta, but there really wasn't character development beyond guts, casca, and griffith. Even now we have 6 serpico, farnese, the little kids and fairies and we know nothing beyond tropes
