Lucas didn't direct the original 2nd and 3rd Star Wars movies, but he did direct the special editions that everyone hates. He also directed the controversial Episodes 1, 2, and 3.
While Tomino directed dozens of different anime, including all of the best Gundam entries. He was quite famous well before Gundam as one of the top storyboardsmen in the industry, even being a go-to guy for Miyazaki & Takahata.
Also OP's quote can't even be true since Yas worked on Gundam throughout the 80s and F91 released in 91.

I've watched other older series like Mazinger and Lupin and most Gundam series are better than those. They're also better than the other mecha series I've seen for the most part. Like Dougram, Macross, and Votoms.
