technological advancements in agriculture meant that suddenly the corn industry was producing way more supply than there was demand. rather than just sell the extra land they no longer needed, they spent the equivilent of billions altering america's entire supply chain just that corn syrup replaced sugar syrup as the sweetener used in everything, and made deala with food producers such that corn syrup started grtting added to everything to make it more addictive, like sliced bread and "zero sugar" drinks
which led to the obesity epidemic, and the rest is history
