It of course depends what type of series you are looking, usually romances don't really have antagonists, now look at yuri series with action, Omae Gotoki is full of male antagonists and male side characters (which honestly are done in a more respectful way you usually see them done in isekai or fantasy settings with male protagonists)

I mean, it's just kinda a natural progression from the initial conceit. Yuri is largely born of the mindset of "why would I write a romance between a cute girl and a guy when I can write it between two cute girls?". This then gets distilled down to the very basic premise of "why should this character be a guy when they can be another cute girl instead?". When you consume anime for the cute girls any character that isn't a cute girl is a waste of a character who COULD be a cute girl.
