Ace worked because
1. He's a mirro to Luffy. He shares Luffy's biggest attributes like his hot-headedness and his loyalty to his friends, but unlike Luffy these same traits end up fucking him over in the end. It was because of those attributes that he went after Blackbeard, ultimately leading to his death
2. He represents Luffy's biggest failure. Luffy lost his attention for a moment towards the end of Marineford, and that was when Akainu tried to kill him. Ace sacrificed his life to save Luffy from his own negligence
