The symbollism is amazing, like the food analogies to what was happening in battle. And the romance, its like those war books about 2 people on different sides of a war sending letters to each other except here its done to the pararaid. Reminds me of A Farewell to Arms a bit.
Also there's something to the style that makes it clear it was written by a woman.
Same. Funny enough I used to be an Anette fan since I love the bitchy research types like Ritsuko in Eva, and I complained that Lena was too passive. But upon rewatching the first season to understand s2 better I realized I forgot most of what Lena did since it aired once a week, but watching it all sequentially made me appreciate that idealistic baka so much more. She really did her best to save those filthy Colorata and her ideals are beautiful.

It was decently popular but more important it allowed LN to receive a huge popularity boost.
It's still too dark and grim to truly become a mainstream show and touches upon subjects that are not that common even in the mecha genre. It also has probably the best depiction of army i've seen in /m/ since.. Kuromukuro maybe?

That's exactly why I liked it, I wouldn't even call it a mecha show. To me it was a slow burn long distance romance between people in time of war, with a mecha backdrop. They very well could have replaced the para-raid with letters and it would have worked just as well imo.

Exactly, I enjoy the irony that the message is supposed to be founded on globalist shit like "lets all get along!" while the bloodlines really require to prevent race mixing to grow more powerful AND there's a way to easily classify each character by race going by appearance and psychic powers.
