I have the same problem with the genre, but I found Blue Lock worthwhile.
Plot is basically:
>japan's national soccer team sucks
>some based lunatic notices that entire teams play better when they have one really, really good player
>he gathers 100 of the best varsity level strikers and locks them in prison
>they will compete in various challeneges
>at the end, the number one player will instanly be slotted into japan's national team
>the rest will be banned from professional soccer forever
