I finished watching the TV series some weeks ago, let some time for it to settle in, and now I'm FINALLY onto the famous The End of Evangelion.
And like... so far, it's such an uncomfortable trip, what the FUCK were these nips thinking?
Everything I knew about the show is getting upside down and it just doesn't stop.

>Misato drops the bomb that the angel number 18 is none other than mankind itself (what the fuck)

>asuka has to fight them all at once
>Misato gets shot
>she's still okay though (whew)
>she fucking makes out with Shinji (!!!!)
>she actually dies afterwards
I had to stop the movie right here, I'm literally afraid to go on...
it can't possibly get any crazier than this, does it? please tell me it goes back to normal a little bit.... is that even possible at this point? fuck.

It gets WAY crazier, bro, but not like you might think. The 2nd half of EoE is a psychedelic mass of nonsense sexual imagery and music.
The first half (that you're almost done with) is THE best part of the Eva franchise. That Asuka fight and MisatoShin making out are the fucking pinnacle of animation.
I watched the whole thing (series and EoE, 1st time anyway) on lsd analogs and WHEW when EoE finished I was ecstatic. I had just seen some shit and I fucking felt it. I fucking cried multiple times lol it was intense.

Well yes its great & all but be invoked had far crazier shit that happens if u ask me. EOE is a reference to it so yeah. Mecha endings are always the most WILD shit in general when it comes to anime.
I noticed a lot of references and takeaways from SDF Macross (I think that was the first show Anno worked on) during the original Eva series, but I haven't watched Ideon. Looks like it's time for more delicious ~1980 mecha I guess.

No one who likes Eva thinks that the religious symbols mean anything. It's all just garbage to look cool, and it does. There's nothing deep here except trying to build empathy when you're depressed and no one relates to you. It's just a fun anime about people with fairly realistic personal issues saving the world with biomechs powered by sexual tension.
No one thinks it's deep on a practical level, but it somehow manages to "feel" deep and really that's even better. It actually has some deep shit about interpersonal relationships and sex, but the crazy plot shit is just there to raise the stakes/tension, not to say anything deep about the nature of life or reality.

Adolescence is thinking Eva is fake-deep because Anno or someone from Gainax once said "uuuuh yeah we used christian symbols to look cool" and start parroting that Eva isn't deep on the internet to feel better about your own IQ
Adulthood is realizing Anno actually did a pretty good job at mixing real life religious/mystic themes with his own sci-fi themes, and that he wasn't even the first person to do so, many golden-era sci-fi novels mixed religion with sci-fi.
