00s - 2010

Quintessential anime from the first decade of this century, the ones that better represent the era and/or your favorites from that era.
Dokuro chan is pretty epic, funny to see references to it in recent anime too (such as Jashin chan).
Feel free to post your favorites, whether they are lesser known or popular whether they are tv anime, ova, movies or even eroge.

I don't know if it's "quintessential" but it's one of my favorite anime and it's from the 2000s. So many good originals made that decade.

Forgot to say the previous one is Stratos 4 if you don't know. Another original from the 2000s that is one my favorites is pic related, Sky Girls. The "precursor" to Strike Witches but it is almost totally different, has a dramatic sci-fi story with surprising twists, and literally every girl is paired up with a male character, subtly or not so subtly. And usually they're a lot older. Don't think it could be made today.

Stratos 4 is fun. It's almost like Haifuri in the skies instead of sea.

god forbid people discuss anime from a certain time period while sharing their favorites and what they liked about them etc, better make room for more jujutsu or chainsawman threads.
Sky Girls seems very interesting by your description, very nice and familiar art style too. I have a vague memory of Stratos 4 but I havent watched it.

>your favorites from that era
For me it's Kanon 2006

I like Haifuri but S4 is the better anime, no question.
I never heard sky girls mentioned here, I randomly stumbled onto it thanks to anilist or anidb or something. It was never licensed outside of Japan that I know of, certainly never had an English language release, that may be part of the reason.
So on to another, Diebuster, it's the sequel to Gunbuster, enough said. Original as well.

And here's another, this time an adaptation, though the ending is better than the manga's and could be considered original. Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase. Vampire teen girl comes into 20something photographer guy's life and lots of magic shenanigans ensues. Romance/drama/supernatural stuff. Made by SHAFT and uses some interesting techniques like the dollhouse view in pic related. The OP is iconic for how silly it is.

Posting Alien 9, short 4 episode OVA that does the eerie empty atmosphere with some horror and sci-fi hints, coming of age drama. Kinda similar to FLCL and Madoka but still its own thing. Worth watching for the OST alone imo.

Such beautiful art. I love Kanon, both the vn and kyoani's rendition. key and kyoani were a killer combo for sure.
Gunbuster and Diebuster are awesome.

Divergence Eve, where sci-fi horror, mecha, and huge-breasted girls meet. If you like all of those things, you're in for a treat. (There's a flat chested android loli too, just in case) The second season, Misaki Chronicles, is the better one, and does some really cool things that I can't even compare to many other anime, it really goes off the rails in a trippy/"dude so philosophical" kind of way.

Quality aside, Divergence Eve was certainly an interesting watch

I think those 4 about cover the ones that stand out to me the most.
Oh, yeah, I like Kanon, the anime is comfy. It is disappointing compared to the VN, though. Even if Ayu is your favorite. Shiori is my fav and the 2006 anime didn't do her justice at all. I still need to watch the 2002 version...

Alien 9 is on my watch list. And yes, both Gunbuster and Diebuster are awesome!
I'm not sure why someone felt the need to make that edit...Here is the original
