There is no answer to this question, as the quality varies wildly with both official and fan translation.
On average you would find official translation better just because localizers have _some_ standards and hire translators who are at the least capable of reading Japanese and writing English to an acceptable extent, while much of fan translation is done by people who have a passing knowledge of Japanese, if any at all, and often with a rather mediocre knowledge of English as well.
That said, you can always find individual examples of fan translation being superior, be it because the official publisher just fucked up somehow (I will forever lament the absolute state of YagaKimi's official manga and anime translations), or because the fan translators in question were genuinely skilled and passionate. It's not uncommon for both to be passable, and then it's just about which translation style and choices you prefer.

From what I have seen, fan translations tend to be more literal, something Any Forums seems to like, while official tend to be more... subdued. Always taking into consideration a large audience, they will adapt things to fit what seems more... consumable. The big audiences never care about "good" translations. They only care about getting the message.

I have no idea which is supposed to be which and i have no idea which is mofe accurate but
Right is better
Left is better
Right is better
Right is better
Right is better
Right is better
Left is better

Not that it matters because these are all dogshit garbage in both cases.

It's more like the casual audience just wants to consume the story in a way that is natural for them, and doesn't care about all of these language/cultural/otaku nuances that us turbo weebs are so hell bent on protecting from localization. The publishers are absolutely doing the right thing for their business. That said, they do have a general understanding of the audience, despite what we may think sometimes, so they're absolutely not above leaving in oniichans in imouto eroge either.

I prefer official translations. Not only do they have higher quality artwork, but translations themselves are not nearly as fucking clunky as unofficial ones usually are.

Learn nihongo and free yourself from both.

>higher quality artwork
That's just because Japanese publishers fucking suck at digital releases. This is the one thing that's not the fan translators' fault. This is also why I sometimes want to read the goddamn official localization instead of the raw, just because the raw is so fucking bad. Who the fuck still releases blurry 1024/1200p garbage in two thousand fucking twenty two?

small indie comapnies can't afford bandwith *raugh*

Shueisha, the poor humble indie company.
I mean, my main gripe is always with Houbunsha, because I'm a hardcore kirarashitter, but almost every time I find something good to read elsewhere - the likes of Shogakukan, Akita Shoten, and Kadokawa fucking butcher the quality. Kadokawa can do decent releases, but it's really hit or miss with them.

Both are fine. God forbid you miss the incredibly deep and inspiring metacommentary pun the author planted in a porn manga.

2048 with no blur filter should be the absolute bare minimum by now. Ichijinsha also does that. Shogakukan switched to 2k but it still looks like crap somehow. Houbunsha is close at 1920, but their filter is just... just no, my eyes can take no more of it.

fan TLs are often but not always better- i mainly say this as they sometimes put in way more effort into things like explaining references when official TLs don't bother
