It's one of my favourite anime and a classic of the genre and period, but if you've read the VN then it's clear that it's very watered down and easily a worse experience. Still essential for any anime fan.

I might be in the minority when I say this, but I actually think the VN is better when you know the truth of what's happening. It's goes from being a mystery/horror/thriller to being a very stirring and emotional tragedy. I would say you should definitely read it if you liked the characters and themes enough.

While it's condensed as fuck, the anime is perfectly competent and I'd recommend it to anyone as the gateway to the series. From the soundtrack to the atmosphere DEENgurashi nails the feeling the VN.
