And it's the least appealing in terms of value. Old otaku buy them out of tradition or some shit. With the mountains of figurines, video game shit or whatever else Love Live has for example, I doubt it's even the most relevant despite having such comparatively good sales.

That's how it goes yes. Well, mostly. When streaming services are on the committee instead of paying for the streaming license they're paying for the anime production instead. Either way it's not really comparable to bds because bds are merch and streaming is akin to broadcasting. You don't compare bd numbers to tv ratings so it makes little sense to compare them to streaming numbers too.
