I've heard it praised for so long so maybe my expectations were too high. Hidamari Sketch is my favorite anime so I thought this would be up my alley

No. I absolutely adore the manga but I couldn't even finish the anime.

It gets better around episode 10 of the first season. The episode where Akari walks them home is the point when their relationships and future together starts to gain some emotional weight, and everything before is a long introduction to the characters and world.

It doesn't change a whole lot if that's what you're hoping. Some of my favorite episodes are from Natural and Origination (particularly when Aria Company has to retire the gondola they've been using, the winter episode at the end of Natural, or the episode where Alice is promoted to Prima). What in particular are you not liking about it?

It just feels like I've seen it before. I can tell every beat before it happens, and the art/music/direction isn't good enough to make up for it. I'm just waiting for the episodes to be over.

It does, the last few episodes of the first season are usually what sells people and then the second and third seasons are great

Arias not going to do anything super new but it's got enough of its own charm that it stands alone compared to its contemporaries. The setting and premise for one is unique, and the relationships that form between the three seniors and their pupils is also different to any other slice of life show

Yup, that's the first pivotal point of the show for me. Before it was pleasant but nothing special. If I recall correctly, episode 11 is also when some of the magical or somewhat supernatural stuff has some emotional weight too, and Natural has some other moments like that. Origination gives viewers a lot of satisfaction being able to tie up storylines that have been present for 3 entire seasons.

Aria IS an iyashikei, Hidamari Sketch is a comedy, they're not really comparable.
