Not even in the early gag arc did it properly "parody" action manga in the way you're insinuating it did. The version of Otokojuku you have in mind you simply made up in your head.
*ahem*
I AM THE PRINCIPAL OF OTOKOJUKU, EDAJIMA HEIHACHI!
That is all.

Also, Edajima Heihachi best principal.

>was made as a gag anime
>achived that purpose
>remembered by all oldfags

what more do you want?

this series has the best tournament arc in manga history

>Starts as a parody of generic shonenshit
this was never the case ever, there were no fucking parodies in the 80s

metafiction is a cancer that only started this century, otokojuku was earnest

>My thoughts about this thread and OP, that notorious faggot hope you had a good pride month

>parody
?
You mean it starts as a comedy, not a parody.

felt like it lost all their parody bits after the second and third years showed up (got bored when the third years showed up and dropped the manga).
maybe it gets it back later?

It starts out with some more gag oriented chapters and then when Akashi shows up it has some mini arcs that are more action based and then by Four Great Trials of Terror it's fighting city.
The Great Heaven-Challenging Olympic Tournament and Maximum Tournament (Baki) have to be so underrated compared to more modern tournament arcs. Dark Tournament from YuYu Hakusho is often brought up as the best tournament arc but I'd say those two are overall better. Some things I'd say Otokojuku lacked in were the fake deaths and guys coming back without explanation (like Dokugantetsu and J/Raiden coming back even though they fell in sulphuric acid meant to disintegrate you in seconds). The clear case of cancellation for the Seven Tusks arc was a tragedy too since it was finally feeling more adventurous with its many different set pieces and Togashi/Toramaru being sidelined despite being so cool prior was really needless (I found them being upstaged as a running gag in the big tournament arc to be annoying since they more than proved themselves prior, with Togashi even winning against Senku).
I wish we could get an anime revival like Dai, JoJo and Bastard. Golden Age Jump seems to be getting a resurgence and I'd like Otokojuku to join the fray. Though I'd want them to actually finish Seven Tusks and make Rakanjuku a longer arc (very fun last arc to end on) but beggars can't be choosers.

What did he mean by this?

it was a parody through and through

it mocks tropes of shonenshit manga like characters running so fast they leave after images

Literally Gintama

>Mocks
Having a little fun with it isn't mocking them. Not only that but it was still a fucking battle arc nonetheless.

It wasn't really a parody exactly, it's more like the author loves battle shonen but he also has a sense of humor and he never lost that. There was definitely bits during the main Otokojuku series where the fun disappeared but that was probably due to pressure that came from success, the majority of it was still funny though and all the later stuff upped that absurd humor even further. But it was still very serious about being a manly manga for men. It's not like he actually thinks those manga are dumb or out-dated, he's just remaking them with jokes.

I mean with the vagueness of your complaint your view of parody you could literally apply it better to the series that got their start in the same batch as him, Kinnikuman.

Honestly, yeah. I haven't read the former but I can confirm that the MT leaves the DT in the dust. The DT has got to be the most overrated shounen manga arc around, let alone tournament arc.

>Show is remotely silly or self aware
>THAT MEANS IT'S A PARODY GUYS! LOL AREN"T WES SUBVERSSIVE AND CLEVER!!

That's not to say I don't like the Dark Tournament. I do. Toguro is a top tier antagonist. I just don't like that Hiei is constantly wanked and never struggles whilst Kuwabara gets turned into a joke character despite not being one in the prior arcs (Toguro even remarked wanting to see him again as well, not just Yusuke), it really brings it down. How it treated Kuwabara is a bit reminiscent of how Otokojuku's Daibukai (the big named tournament I mentioned, just the shorter name) treated Togashi and Toramaru so it's not like I'm unaware Otokojuku isn't a bit guilty of it too.

This was the final page of his most popular series before Otokojuku. Is this an author who likes to have fun? Yes. Is he still sincere about loving the all those shonen manga tropes that you hate? Yes.

Also, it's a bit silly when retards go back in time to pick out Otokojuku as mocking shonen tropes, you haven't even read the manga he's referencing. The "serious" author he's most explicitly referencing in his early work is literally the author who publishes the original Otokojuku today. So his manga is still published right alongside the manga you think he is mocking.

My main issue with it is that all the fights suck. It's not an arc I can see myself rereading at all. Toguro (both of them I guess) is a pretty good antagonist, mostly because of how atypical he is -- but I feel like he shines brighter because everything else in the arc is so typical and boring. Even the final round of the tournament only really manages to be kinda fun because of how much it escalates over the previous rounds. The actual fight is pretty boring. Typical isn't a sin, but if you're going to be typical then at least do it well -- this is where the MT excels I believe.
And it bothers me that people wank Yusuke as some great protagonist when he's the most bare-bones, basic bitch shounen manga protagonist with a delinquent coat of paint right up until the final arc of the manga.
