I have to admit I have no idea what Japanese people actually eat. Anime depicts them eating tons of junk food but they're the skinniest first world country so that can't be actually what happens

Think about this. Anime GENERALLY is for Japanese. Their culture their jokes. When we watch it, we don't understand 100%. The stubble wordplay jokes or society issues, the charcter quirks. We can watch a shit ton of anime and recognize the tropes but never truly understand it. Rwby may borrow anime tropes at a surface level. But it was designed for a western audience. Our jokes and humor. Things we can get.
