The twist is that she's actually the same age as Lucy and Erza, and that her healing magic passively slows down her aging (and growth). Just look at Edo Wendy from a place where magic is an external source.

Plus, in Edolas, Jellal is Makarov's son, which was an idea Mashima came up with that never got time to be revealed in the manga.

The only thing we do know he had thought of at the time was that "the dragons were hiding inside their dragon slayers the whole time" because of Natsu and Gajeel being unable to leave Freed's age-based rune prison.
We also know Porylusica is Edo Grandyne, who wouldn't have been there for the same 400 year reason. (This is the only screenshot I have of her I'm so sorry)
