I like the first Hellsing anime (and the first anime Seras) more than Hellsing Ultimate, though I saw the Hellsing before Hellsing Ultimate and I've never read the manga. I understand those who've read the manga prefer Hellsing Ultimate.

I like both for different reason. Ultimate for the animation, action, and staying closer to the source material. 2001, music, tone/atmosphere, and it feeling like slower burn. Both had good VAs. Also 2001 has the cuter police girl.

The first hellsing anime is wonderfully creepy and an excellent work of vampire fiction. I still remember how chilling it was when Seras went from refusing to drink blood to downing a whole bowl of it after seeing the snuff film producer lady be drained by Alucard
In Ultimate, Seras slowly slides into edgy superhero-dom. In original, she slowly slides into vampirism.

It wasn't really a remake, just another adaptation of the same source material. Just like they made the Devilman OVAs in 1990 because the 1972 Devilman wasn't really telling the same story as the manga.

I still love the look and tone of the first anime, and it has the superior ost, though I still enjoy the overall story and art of the manga/ova. I've always loved this scene from the first episode.

It was a good alternate take on a good manga that was produced on a terrible budget. I didn't like that Alucard basically became a supporting character in the anime, but you hardly see anything from Seras in the OVA/manga.
