This isn't true. They look at real people all the time. There are tons of references books full of real photos of real people Japanese artists use all the time. The first thing you do while learning to draw is observe your subject. The most common genres of anime are about observing human life.

He is right though. Modern anime is full of characters that are more living tropes than an assortment of believable traits that develop over time. In the Western animation sphere this problem is even more pronounced, its full of people that just cannot bear to look at the female figure and end up drawing grotesque monstrosities. All one has to do is compare the original She-Ra to the modern reboot. The original was a leggy woman that had clear feminine traits even if they were exaggerated because it was following old pin-up style proportions on the character. The new one is some broad shouldered androgynous something or another. The current anime trend of making women with massive udders rather than believable proportions is a sign that fetish is taking control rather than serious attempts at making grounded characters. Anime always had a problem with character development for but post 2008 its been getting progressively worse.
