By giving in to Akainu's laughable "your dad" insults (Whitebeard was neither his father, nor dead, and thus didn't deserve the mentally retarded "I need to defend his honorabru leputation from surander!", and it didn't warrant it even if he were those things), he rendered the sacrifices of everyone there, like all of those dead friends and especially Whitebeard himself, moot and pointless. All for his own ego.
